Volunteers are an essential part of HospiceCare of Boulder and Broomfield Counties. It is evident from the responses of patients, families and staff that volunteers are an important part of the hospice team of caregivers. They are also an integral part of the hospice administrative operation.
HospiceCare of Boulder and Broomfield Counties volunteers come from all walks of life. They are of all ages, educational and ethnic backgrounds. They bring their unique skills and life experiences to their volunteer commitment.
Volunteers serve wherever patients reside. They provide companionship for patients, run errands, perform chores in homes, nursing homes, and in our Care Center, and allow family members to get away for relaxation or other duties.
Certified massage therapists and interns give massages on a voluntary basis to patients and family members.
We use volunteers in our office and in all support programs with kids, teens and adults.
Volunteers can help in a variety of ways; sorting merchandise, organizing and displaying items in the store, cashiering and greeting customers.
Volunteers assist in planning and producing special events to raise funds for hospice programs. See current event volunteer opportunity.
Volunteers make presentations and host booths at community events on behalf of hospice.
Volunteers provide office support and assist hospice staff with special projects.
Volunteers use music to increase comfort and reduce stress and anxiety for patients and families.
Volunteers bring their trained therapy dogs to visit patients and lift their spirits.

Hospice selects people based on their qualifications, their ability to deal with dying, death and grief, and their availability to meet the current needs of the clients and of the organization.
All volunteers receive training appropriate to their assignment. Volunteers who work with hospice patients and families must complete a 20-hour core training course, with additional, specialized training depending on the area of service.
After training is completed, hospice requires a minimum commitment of one year of volunteer service, for 2 to 4 hours a week.

Medicare requires that volunteers provide five percent of the direct patient care hours. HospiceCare of Boulder and Broomfield Counties volunteers have historically provided a more substantial percentage. Hospice could not provide grief support to our community without our volunteers.
